Minutes of 9/13/04 Meeting

Fellow Toastmasters,

Report on 9/13/04 Meeting
The first meeting of the 2003-2004 year was held Monday, September 13, 2003. We planned to meet in the Westview Community Room; however, that room proved to be unavailable, so on short notice, and with the assistance of Luigi Cavandoli, the group moved to the RIVAA Gallery. Even with the change of venue, President Jim Luce the meeting began on time.

Toastmaster Sue Brown presided with her usual warmth and cheer. As Wordmaster, Luigi Cavandoli challenged us all to use the word "Machiavellian" in our speeches. He also provided a brief review of Machiavelli's life and writings. We can credit him with the phrase, "The end justifies the means."

The theme of Janet Schoene's Table Topics was "Beginnings." We heard about beginning a life in American, beginning school, and beginning a trip, among other things. It was very appropriate for the first meeting of the year.

The speeches were delightful. Jennifer Cali gave Speech #3. In it she described an extremely rare and interesting coconut tree that grows only in her native Seychelles. She brought a sample of the extremely large fruit that it bears.

Robert Gray's Speech #5 described taking his daughter to Atlanta to begin her studies at Emory University. He described the beautiful campus with its very impressive architecture. During the orientation activities there was a banquet at which the beverage for the toast was Coca Cola because the Coca Cola company is benefactor of Emory.

Thomas Morf provided a serious note for his speech #5. He reported on a research study which suggested various strategies which western nations could use to reduce world tension to capture the hearts of people living in less developed nations. These included the eradication of malaria, the provision of clean water, the distribution of vitamins, and prevention of the spread of HIV. All of them could realistically be accomplished at reasonably low cost if the will to do them were summoned.
